Connecticut zoo receives $1 million for tiger habitat

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (AP) Connecticut's Beardsley Zoo says it has received $1 million from a longtime zoo supporter to fund the creation of a new habitat for a family of tigers.

Zoo Director Gregg Dancho says the donation is from Pamela Hope Kochiss-Werth and will go toward the creation of a new habitat for the endangered Amur tigers. The Connecticut Post reports this is the first grant made by Kochiss-Werth's new foundation, and says it reflects her individual philanthropy.

Tiger cubs Zeya and Reka had only a 25 percent chance of survival when they were born last year. The Amur tiger also known as the Siberian tiger is an endangered species of tiger native to eastern regions of Russia and northeastern China.
