Unidentified remains found in search for missing woman

EAST HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Two weeks after an East Haven woman went missing, the search for her led to the discovery of human remains 3 miles from her home.

East Haven police said on Wednesday they found a body buried in a shallow grave behind a restaurant in Branford, Connecticut.

Lizzbeth Aleman-Popoco, 27, disappeared overnight between June 30 and July 1. Police say her 7-year-old daughter woke up to find her gone, and called her father, who was at work. Most of Aleman-Popoco’s personal belongings were still inside the home when she was discovered missing.

Capt. Joseph Murgo of the East Haven police told the Hartford Courant that investigators had not yet identified the body, and an autopsy was scheduled for Thursday. They believe Aleman-Popoco could be the victim of a crime.

Aleman-Popoco’s family filed a missing persons report on July 3, and appeared with police at a press conference on Tuesday to ask the public to share any relevant information, the New Haven Register reported.

The body found Wednesday was located about a 10-minute drive from Aleman-Popoco’s home.
