Out-Of-State Plate Fraud Costing Connecticut Millions

Connecticut towns are losing millions each year as some residents dodge taxes by registering vehicles in other states. Officials say the problem goes beyond property taxes, with lost revenue from registrations, emissions, insurance, and unpaid tickets. They say getting plates from places like Maine or Montana is easy and doesn’t require living there, making it a popular loophole. Despite state law requiring vehicles kept overnight in a town to be taxed locally, enforcement has been limited, forcing some cities to hire private firms to track down violators and recover lost revenue.
